Parts of I-35 reopen, other San Antonio roads still closed after historic flooding

Update on June 12 at 11:39 a.m.: Two lanes remain blocked on I-10 West near Culebra Road due to high water, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. This was first reported at 4:44 a.m., but the lanes are still blocked. The entrance ramp onto I-35 South at San Pedro Avenue is closed, but the other five lanes, along with the shoulder, have been cleared.

All three main lanes and both shoulders of I-35 South at Salado Creek were confirmed to be blocked due to high water at 7:19 a.m. These lanes are still blocked off. Both lanes on I-10 at Exit 574 Eastbound are blocked due to high water. The closure was confirmed at 8:23 a.m., and the lanes are still blocked. Lane closures on I-35 North at Loop 410 have been partially cleared. Two lanes are open, but the exit ramp remains blocked due to high water. The closures were first reported by TxDOT at 4:01 a.m.

The frontage road of U.S. 90 at Leon Creek has been reopened after being closed due to high water at 5:59 a.m. High water was reported on Loop 1604 West at Bulverde Road at 9:17 a.m. The status of lanes is unknown, per TxDOT.  

The City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department has added numerous road closures. Mauermann Road from South Zarzamora to Pleasanton Road was closed due to water on the roadway. This was closed at 9:50 a.m., and four barricades were placed to block the road. Montana Street from Tower of the Americas Way to IH-37 South was closed at 8:50 a.m. due to water on the roadway, as well. Five barricades have been placed to block the road.

Old Grissom Road from Timber Path to Culebra was closed at 10:47 a.m. due to flooding, and six barricades were placed to block the road. 

Numerous roads and portions of highways in San Antonio are closed after the city experienced record-breaking rainfall in the morning hours on Thursday, June 12. Multiple highways reported high water on the roads, resulting in multiple shutdowns, including I-35 at the Loop 410 exit. The Texas Department of Transportation reports the northbound exit ramp is completely blocked because of flood waters. 

Portions of the lower level of I-35 near San Pedro Avenue are closed due to standing water on the roadways. On Thursday morning, the upper level of I-35 was at a standstill due to the lower level being closed as cars tried to merge over. The closure took place just before 5:30 a.m.

Bexar County’s flood website indicates there are more than 30 road closures across the San Antonio area, and the City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department has numerous closures listed on the map and 41 instances of water over the roadway, although several have yet to be verified. The following roads have been reported as closed by the Public Works Department due to flooding:

Those driving in the city should be cautious of traffic delays caused by road closures due to high water, and remember that it is illegal to drive around barricades at low-water crossings, according to Bexar County. If you see water on a roadway, it’s best to turn around so you don’t put yourself in harm’s way.
